Born in the Philippines, Hanna Varela is a healthcare professional based in Singapore. She has been fondly shooting film since 2009. Self-taught and still learning, Hanna describes her work as eccentric, fun and occasionally monochrome. She enjoys taking portraits and shoots with a variety of films and cameras with a twist of light painting and multiple exposure.
During the period of restricted social interactions caused by the Covid 19 lockdown that began in mid 2020, Hanna imagined a strange world of light and colors confined within the four walls of her home. Wanting to translate the images in her head into something instantly tangible, she began shooting polaroids.
We asked Hanna what this year has been like for her. Our readers had sent in some questions and nearly all were regarding her work as a healthcare professional in contrast with her work in film photography and art.
“This has been a tough year, especially at work! I’m from the Philippines so I can’t go back home to my family. Honestly, shooting polaroids at home was the best thing for my mental health this year. I would go back home after a stressful day at work and take photos of my friends (who are also nurses) that I live with. All that stress and anxiety translated into the colorful strange portraits you see.
The nature of my work as a nurse is very stressful mentally and physically, especially this year with an ongoing pandemic. Taking polaroids has been a form of escapism and therapy for me. There is relief in letting my imagination run free and transforming then into a physical photograph.”

Hanna Varela é profissional de saúde e fotógrafa autodidata. Nasceu nas Filipinas e hoje mora em Cingapura. Ela fotografa com filme analógico desde 2009, mas foi somente durante esse período de confinamento na pandemia que começou a experimentar com fotografia instantânea. Achou na Polaroid o meio ideal para traduzir suas ideias em algo tangível. Hanna gosta de usar câmeras novas e antigas (One Step + Spectra) e de brincar com múltipla exposição e técnicas mescladas de intervenção.
Perguntamos a ela como foi equilibrar seu trabalho essencial na área médica com sua produção artística em 2020.
Foi um ano difícil, principalmente no trabalho! Eu sou das Filipinas, então não posso voltar para meu país, minha família agora nas festas. Sinceramente, fotografar em casa foi a melhor coisa para minha saúde mental esse ano. Gostava de voltar para casa após um dia estressante no trabalho e tirar fotos das minhas amigas, que também são enfermeiras e que moram comigo. Acho que todo o estresse e ansiedade se traduziram nesses estranhos e coloridos retratos que você vê.
A natureza do meu trabalho como enfermeira é muito estressante mental e fisicamente, especialmente este ano com uma pandemia em andamento. Fazer polaroids tem sido uma forma de terapia para mim. É um alívio poder deixar minha imaginação correr livre e transformá-la em uma fotografia física.
